I did a quick Google check, and in fact the average life expectancy was indeed pretty short. Way shorter than I thought. The average life span of males born in landholding families in England was only 31.3 years and the biggest danger was surviving childhood. Once children reached the age of 10, their life expectancy was 32.2 years, and for those who survived to 25, the remaining life expectancy was 23.3 years. That's for nobility mind you. Peasants most likely lived shorter lives, and almost everyone in the Middle Ages was a peasant.

No wonder our bodies start to break down when we approach our 40s. We aren't ment to last that long in the first place.

Back in the day being old meant something. They practically believed old people were magic. Old people called the shots and young shitters listened, and that's how society worked until 2 things happened: 1. people started living longer as a result of the free market 2. I would argue that, aside from severe climate change and loss of technical and military superiority over enemies, a main factor in the collapse of the Roman Empire was its adoption of Christianity as the state religion, and the consequential negative effects on the optimism, vitality and self-respect on the Roman people. A state religion based on getting the gods to help you and your country have a successful, meaningful and satisfying earthly existence was replaced with one concerned entirely with getting your sorry and undeserving soul into Heaven. The effects were devastating to social and public life.
