Using that exact same metric, you can say that Europeans were "selling their brothers" as well since the dawn of time, Asians did so as well, Middle Easterners ditto, Native Americans as well of course. Where as jews for example have a very high perceived unity. If you want to rule over other nations it is important to find some common ground among your people and form a large group with identical interests or use alliances.
