I only know about Thailand.
Here a lot of people don't have work permit but go serial with tourist visas and take 1 day trip out of the countries when they expire. These are known as visa-runs. There are also semi-bogus language courses that grant student visas without much commitment.
It has gotten stricter lately though. Without a legit visa it can be unstable and you might have periods where you will have to stay abroad. It depends on the stability and security you require.
If you have a bachelor degree or is a native English speaker you can find a legit job but it may take some time.
You cannot live like a king. Luxury items cost the same or more. Basic living is dirt cheap though. You can easily survive with even the most meager income.
I suggest you get the longest tourist visa you can get. The length depends on your nationality. And see if it fits your temperament, some love it, some hate it.
