Hell is used extremely vague because of Dante's Inferno. In Christianity it only means that the damned will be sent to the lake of fire not be tortured in it meaning it can be a one time thing.

@Doomedvirgin also in the old testament hell was not mentioned in it, Christianity is just a Jewish religion and they made up hell later on to scare believers they stole from shitty pagan religions.
