They don't want to face reality, because than they would have to accept how brutally average they actually are - they all have main character syndrome, they're not humble people and refuse to let life humble them. They think one day it will all play out and be okay, like a movie with a happy ending. These are not intelligent people.
They live to take advantage of situations. That's why this world feels so stale because it's been exhausted. What do you think would happen if food became free? Good luck getting any. Same thing with sex.
