For most of recorded history, sexual activity or simply kissing outside the vows of marriage was punished by death, lashing, public humiliation or fines, as well as psychological torture (the perspective of going to Hell).
In the Middle Ages, fornicators were fined and forced to marry immediately. Divorce was also forbidden of course.
How and when has fornication become so commonplace?
Law dictated that the clergy report known fornicators (those who were unmarried and had sexual relations) to the law authorities
