This is one of the biggest metro areas in Europe, the Randstad metro.. with ~8.4 million people. The area of this is 11,372 km. This is about half the people in Holland, and 1/4 of the area of Holland. In other words the rest of Holland is 1/3rd as dense as this. And Holland is the densest country of more than 1,000,000 people in Europe. France has 1/4 the density as the Netherlands.
The circles are where cities/towns are. All the other area is farmland. So even in this very densely populated area of Europe they have tons of room to build out.. all the farmland area. And no they don't need all that farmland anymore, because of rising crop yield per acre and falling meat consumption. The Dutch government said by 2030 they will have bought out and shut down 30% of the farms in the Netherlands, as it is no longer needed.
Zooming in on Dutch cities on Google Earth, its like townhouses in their big cities.
This I took on Google Earth in eastern Holland. The border on the right is the German border. You see what I am saying the country is 90% farmland. If you look at the measurement that is 10 kilometers.
