Christianity never had the stated goal of making the life of ugly men easier. I was able to identify this in my mid 20s, after taking time to understand the nature of men and women.The hypothesis I created based off of my real life experience was that religion was necessary to perpetuate society shortly after agriculture was discovered. It is human nature to question what we were told, which is why we are all called children in the religious texts. I get the point. I think most people do believe in god. Christianity is still out there and there are some sects which are still pretty strict. But even their leaders don't live their lives according to the gospel. People only flock to religion when they are scared of death. Back in the 17th century death was much more present. Something as simple as a tooth ache could be fatal. Improvements in health care and hygiene allowed people to have a longer life span. Food production also increased. People no longer had to rely on their local staple for nourishment. Exotic and more nutritious foods became easily available. Your argument about religion doesn't really hold water. Christianity customs, like any set of laws, only applied to public activities. People have always fucked around.
