I’d recommend improving your camping and outdoors skills.
Pick a place that is a few miles out of town, like a wooded area.
Camp there and walk to town when you need to resupply.
How far outside of town depends on your fitness level. But, one or two miles is usually far enough.
You want to avoid other homeless people. They are not your friends.
If someone ever attacks you, or steals from you, it will probably be another homeless guy.
