Thankfully there are always solutions to bypass this but you get 2005 level internet speeds, especially with something like Tor.

China has it worse, especially PRC original territory, Hong Kong cels have it slightly better.
I know Hong kongcels have it slightly better especially thanks to their protests a couple years back.
China developed their own internet ecosystem basically through stuff like Wechat but the number of dissidents is too small for the government to consider them a threat.
Surprisingly 1984 isn't banned there and even the english Wikipedia page to the Tianamen Square protests, many people just don't realize there's an internet outside their own.
