Dealing with this now a little bit at work. There's a girl who has an innocent but slightly flirty, nice, agreeable nature with everyone. She giggles and listens and reinforces, but she treats everyone this way. I've recently come to realize that she is supplicating to everyone as essentially a coping mechanism to ensure no one dislikes her. This is of course susceptible to guys like us because we're not used to decent treatment. I'd got it in my head that we had a good relationship, but was forced to step back and examine recently and realized that she just treats everyone that way and still gives googly eyes to the more attractive men around her, and by paying a little more attention to subtleties realized that she had me pretty lowly ranked, and actually came to realize she was a little sympathetic and condescending towards me. When I reframed some of her behavior as being sympathetic/condescending and some of it from back when she was newer to the work group (new people suck everyone's dick until they figure out the dynamics) I realized I had been intentionally tricked in exactly the way her behavior is aiming towards. I don't think she's conniving, I think there's just a voice in her head that everything is going to fall out from beneath her and so she curry's the favor of everyone to make sure nothing bad happens to her. She is incapable of conflict or expressing her feelings. She keeps them to herself to maintain control. She wants people to think she likes them as a defensive mechanism so she can maintain a modicum of control over them. It's very basic in a way but it's harder to detect because when normal people do this it's a mode they switch on and it's just her entire personality.
