JFL Hannah Fry: Studying maths until 18 will traumatise teenagers – not transform Britain

How is that a bad comment? What's the point teaching more advanced math to people who can't add or subtract properly.

Justifying compulsory high school math because "muh innumeracy" is pure idiocy.

Ps. This will just drag the quality of learning for all students who want to learn math, let's get all worst bullies and jocks to disrupt classes and bully "nerds". And let's dumb down the curriculum so they can pass.

You forgot to understand my point. So I make it simpler:

- In the past it was not compulsory to study math until 18 but only to 14-16
-Government now says you must study it till 18
-Reason given is that 8 million people are doing math max at level of 11 year olds.

DOES NOT COMPUTE

Questions:
-What will happen to A-lv math classes when morons incapable and unmotivated to study flood them?

Ps. I don't consume coofid vaccines, Netflix or Tiktok.

While all of this is true, the article is way too soy.
Finally, it’s essential that we realise that being traumatised by maths is a genuine issue that a lot of people have experienced. Curing this phobia of the subject starts with teachers. With the right teacher, students can be inspired and pushed enough to achieve in maths, regardless of their natural ability. I believe you can make everybody feel comfortable with maths and the right teacher can make students fall in love with the subject, too.
The real issue, it seems to me, is that soyciety is becoming too advanced for most sheeple. I sincerely doubt most of them have sufficient intellectual faculties to keep up. Trying to properly educate the masses is a waste of money.

Math classes were boring as hell until age 15 because they were too easy but the pace was set by slowest performers in class anyway.

The extra assignments I got to kill the time were easy too.

mandatory schooling is retarded. we must go back to to the days where 80% of people can't read or write

That includes the overwhelming majority of users here, it should be noted. None of us are the Ubermensch.

In Spain it used to be like this (mandatory math for everyone until the end of high school) until the late 90s when they made an education reform. Now math is mandatory for everyone until the last year of middle school (15 years old), in high school if you go for the humanities route you won't have math but you will have Latin. However if you go for the scientific route of course you will keep doing math, same for the social/business route but their math is a bit easier because they don't do geometry and do financial math instead. But the rest of the topics are pretty much the same of the scientific route.

And? Do you really think the majority of people actually use even a fraction of the things they learned in secondary school? In contemporary soyciety you can no longer do without arithmetic, reading and writing, but you can largely get by without detailed knowledge of anything else. Instead of teaching people about derivatives, redox reactions, quantum mechanics, the Coriolis effect, WWI or the difference between C₃ and C₄ plants, it would be nice if people could spell properly and cashiers could actually grosso modo guesstimate what the total should come to.
None of us are the Ubermensch.
If you mean Übermensch in the sense of Nietzsche, then I don't even wanna be one.

Nice strawman bro.

If you want to support this "let's teach morons who haven't learnt the basics some advanced stuff while knowing they aren't learning anything and destroying the learning experience of students who want to learn reform, then I demand following concessions".

-Every school must segregate math classes between elite students and the rest, every single one
-Elite course has the advanced stuff while normal course uses the watered down slow curriculum.
-There is tight discipline in classes, any disruption gets you yeeted out
-There is control that homework gets done and that exams get passed, no mercy and passing people along

Etc.

I support this because it is primarily foids who suck at maths. I’m pretty sure they made maths not compulsory in year 11 and 12 to accommodate foids. I hear they are bringing it back here as well due to the skills shortage
