Why is this game worshipped to such degree, again? It was great for its time but I didn't feel like it had any sort of cross-generational staying power. HL3 might have made a splash had it come out like, 10 years ago? What does it have to offer today?

the community was huge and there was an enormous amount of interesting mods and 3rd party content, comparable or bigger to any other game you could think of, it's where counterstrike came from, and unlike what some retards believe no you wouldn't have counterstrike without half-life, the mod was obviously inspired by half-life and its expansions and counterstrike's development also involved valve's developers.
the game even still works as a goldmine for skibidi 3rd party content now in 2025, because of its detailed world that is full of weird creatures and people and funny voices
Except I played it when it came out... whatever. Still don't get the hype through the years, to me all of it kind of died out in waiting for the next game.

i think it's a game that is worth replaying along with some of its singleplayer mods like poke646, rather than just one and done.

It's nothing compared to the Doom modding scene, tbh. At least decades have yielded far superior results towards level design and sprite work compared to the source material. I have yet to find a single community made campaign manufactured by the Half Life community that has even half the immersion of the source material. It's one of the best titles from the late 90s period.
