I love love love his fictional works but Lovecraft was not the "muh based nazi" you think of him as. He had a Jewish lover whom he almost married (or actually married, idk memory eludes me). In his later years, he had grown much more liberal and accepting of other races. He had famously said that a chink raised in USA is no different than a white raised in USA granted that his appearance was somehow transmogrified into a Caucasian phenotype, implying that he was not a race realist.

Lovecraft also grew tolerant of Southern Europeans in his later years, as opposed to his earlier Anglo-Saxon supremacism. Of course that doesn't mean he was a multiculturalist (he was as caustic towards blacks at the end of his life as he was earlier) but he did display views consonant with assimilationism in his final years.

He could have been referring to how the US was becoming a multicultural/racial country but if what else you say is true than it would be consistent with that

Most people genuinely did accept them as European/White back then, but just of a lower-stock kinda like Slavs or the Irish and even the French

as opposed to his earlier Anglo-Saxon supremacism.

But yeah, early on he was a hardcore Anglo-Saxon Nordicist
