1. Has nothing to do with chivalry, has to do with proper usage. If you have a dog, you can just randomly beat the dog up if you want to I guess, or you could simply treat the dog well and train it to guard your property. My point is that it makes no sense logically to just randomly beat up the dog. "Negative reinforcement" has to have a clear message behind it, or else it's wasted, and it's just sadism.
