I got a job as a case manager and had to take calls often. I always stumbled over my words and didn't know what to say. I was riddled with anxiety the whole fucking time. The bitch manager there didn't even seem like she wanted to train me. I was let go in a week after she talked with the top manager. He told me I could stay but I would be in another department and would have to take a pay cut. It's a small company so it's humiliating having everyone there see me get demoted. I need the money though, fuck. I'm thinking of taking it.

You could just say to people, they made a mistake with the budget thinking they could hire someone as a case manager, so they had to withdraw the job, but didn't want to lose you so offered you a lesser role for the time being. I don't condone lying but you could say something to that effect, to save the humiliation and make it look like the hiring manager was incompetent, not you
