In the 19th century Russia there was particular kind of hobos called "Горюны" (Goriuns or Sorrowers). Basically, they tried to come off as miserable as possible in order to persuade people give them some money out of pity or just to validate their unemployment and laziness.
Often they migrated in big hords from town to town like a crows and by doing so spreaded spirit of miserableness across country. And cultivated this miserable spirit inside them.
Some of them considered their state as natural and designed by God, although quite often it were young and capable men who became Sorrowers.
Sometimes in order to have "legitimate confirmation" Goriuns bribed some small state clerk or policeman to write something tragic in their papers: "wounded soul", "fire victim", "will die soon", "pitiful one", "lost every relative" and so on.
By the end of 19th century there were 500-800 thousands of hobos in Russia, Goriuns included.
Sometimes, .is users (myself included) remind me of Sorrowers. Spreading miserableness around we simultaneously cultivate it inside of us.
I'm pretty much sure some of us ready to write "KHHHDV", "5'2 indian janitor", "throwned into pit of crocodile" "mogged to death" in passport.
If you interested in this topic you can read works of Josiah Willard. He wrote about hobos across the world - strongly recommended.
