She dated some guy she had an attraction for but when she dumped him she had to rationalize that he was below her to avoid all blame for the break up, they do this kind of rationalizations all the time. Therefore in her mind she had been indeed dating an "average man", conveniently forgetting that she didn't see him as average at first.
Also the possessive behavior she's describing in the guy is the result of the natural anxiety that a person without options has when is in a relationship with a partner with better options (the "dread" as Rollo Tomassi used to say, if you have read him); however she attributes the behavior to his ego, because as usual she's trying to portray him in hindsight in a very negative view, again as they usually do. Because for women ego in a man is a bad trait but identifying it as anxiety could open the door to see him as a victim and left her open to criticism for having dumped him, and as we know women can't tolerate criticism, the fucking flakes.
