The recognition of Israel's right to exist has recently become a prerequisite for naturalization in Brandenburg - and cause for a row in the governing alliance of the SPD and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW). BSW state chairwoman Friederike Benda reacted with sharp criticism: "This is the path to the ideological state - and a direct attack on the heart of our democracy." The CDU, which is in opposition, demanded in view of the disunity in the state government: "Brandenburg's coalition must urgently clarify its position on Israel."
Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) made it clear that there will be no compromises in the Israel commitment in view of Germany's special historical responsibility. "It's quite simple: the right of the State of Israel to exist is non-negotiable for us. Anyone who is of the opinion that the state of Israel should not exist in its 1948 borders, which are recognized under international law, cannot be naturalized in Germany," Woidke said in response to a request from dpa in the afternoon. Brandenburg is thus following a provision of the Nationality Act, which was reformed in June 2024 by the then traffic light coalition.
Last week, Brandenburg's Interior Minister René Wilke (independent) said that the recognition of the right of the State of Israel to exist had been included as a condition for obtaining the German passport. This was done in consultation with the Prime Minister.
Wilke emphasized that this does not mean that one must agree with all decisions of the Israeli government. "It is not the confession that everything that any head of government in Israel has ever done and will ever do will also receive solidarity and agreement."
BSW state chairwoman Benda, on the other hand, attacked the coalition partner SPD. On Facebook, she wrote: "The introduction of a commitment to Israel's right to exist as a naturalization obligation was neither coordinated nor announced with us. This is a slap in the face of democracy." Additional political tests of conviction create new social explosives instead of solving problems.
The CDU parliamentary group chairman in the state parliament in Potsdam, Jan Redmann, on the other hand, criticized the BSW for questioning the hitherto undisputed dictum of Israel's security as a German reason of state. For some time now, the BSW has been criticizing Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip in particular.
Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU) considers the new practice in Brandenburg with the Israel commitment in naturalizations to be worth considering for Berlin as well. Saxony-Anhalt set this in 2023. Other federal states had also discussed it in the past.
Until now, people who want to be naturalized have had to commit themselves to the free democratic basic order of the Basic Law, among other things. Enemies of the constitution should not get a German passport.
