Doctor tells jury Preston 'had around 40 injuries to his body'
The doctor says Preston had around 40 injuries to his body when he died. These comprised of around 30 external bruises, internal bruising to the throat and pelvic organs, and a fractured arm, the jury is told.
There were features in the post mortem report that were consistent with acute upper airways obstruction. The doctor explains her area of expertise is determining accidental or non accidental injuries in children, however she considered the post mortem findings when she prepared her report, she says.
The post mortem excluded natural disease and no foreign body was found in the airway, however there was a large area of bruising to the back of the throat. There was no bruising to the outside of the neck or the front of the throat, suggesting there had been direct blunt force trauma to the area, Dr Gifford says.
She says there are a number of possible causes of upper airways obstruction, such as smothering or choking. However the bruising to the throat and pathological signs of asphyxia suggested something had been put in the throat to cause a blockage. She says this was consistent with sexual abuse
