in reality we do not have free will, where and who youre born too, your brain, your looks, youre environment etc are all that determines your life, its never yourself, after realising this myself, i found out that life is truly unfair.

@Sir Silentium When you wake up I'm curious what your take on this is

That's maximal autonomy you speak of, not free will. The best way to define free will is by having the ability to make concious decisions. Regardless of influence. When someone truly doesn't have free will is when their conscious mind is being shut down and they are completely ruled by unconcious instincts.

Fatalism is a superior philosophy since it perfectly explains the nature of choice and its influence on our future. You have 10 decisions but due to uncontrolled factors such as the enviroment, genes, the era you are born in, etc, ultimately your fate is sealed.

Also, why is this in ID?

OP and my version of "free will" differ.

My take on free will (in a biblical aspect too) --> choosing our own pathways and decisions in life.
OPs take on free will --> choosing our pre-determined characteristics, that will lead to an alternative life.

So ofc OPs take wouldn't be realistic in regards to "free will" being a complete choice of how our life will turn out. But the realistic version of free will is having free authority over the decisions that we make.

Also, I agree with this reply:

Especially this image:

You don't believe in free will?

Genetic determinism is a brutal black pill to swallow, most people want to think that the actions we take determines our future but in reality our genetics and environment plays a much more vital role

I'll just copy and paste what I said about this same topic a month ago as I don't have anything else to say (nor is there anything else of value to really say about the topic):

In a universe governed by causality, free will (in the literal sense of the phrase) is impossible even on paper.

"Nooo bro you don't understand! If you have the right mindset your brain can magically circumvent causality. The laws of physics don't apply to your brain cells bro!"

The arguments for free will don't even make sense in theory. To steelman, the absolute best point they have is the "unknown unknowns" argument. We don't understand exactly how consciousness/sentience exists, therefore we can't know for sure. But that's like saying "we haven't explored every square inch of the bottom of every ocean, therefore we can't know for sure Spongebob Squarepants isn't real".

My perspective on this is that free will is only possible in a deterministic, causal universe but that's a topic for another day I guess
