Can someone explain to me all this season garbage stuff in video games nowadays?

Evn Counter Strike has this shit and when I hop on every couple of month to be surprised with some season pass I have no clue what this means and what I can do with it.

There never seem to be any explanations. All I see is that one can buy a season pass, but have no clue what it does.
