Islamic literally separates yourself from your culture, it literally genocides your native culture and forces you to accept the foreign culture
The best examples of this are Iran, Pakistan (and Bangladesh) and in the last few years Malaysia.
The PAS (Malaysian Islamic Party) has had its best ever electoral results in the most recent elections. It's in a bad state already thanks to small doses of radicalism like criminalising apostasy for Muslims and blasphemy laws.
However, politically this will be a rather unique experiment, this is islamism
purely through democratic means so we will see if Malaysia improves (in the long run of course) or not and how this improvement or lack thereof will be related to Islamism.
Also, this time it will be really hard to blame the west for the
democratic desicion of Malaysians so we might finally have a interislamic discussion on the repercussions of islamism.
There has recently been a "green" wave, green is the color of Islam. A radical Islamic party almost won the national election. They already have a stronghold in three of all thirteen states, and we see how they rule in their states-- they ban cinemas and concerts, you have to cover up, gender segregation, rampant corruption, and underdevelopment (including water facilities, etc). They told their people to dig their wells lol and mind you, the country is quite strong economically.
Unlike its neighbors, Malaysia is heavily industrialized. They do not rely on tourism like Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines nor do they provide high-level service like Singapore. Instead, they make electronics and export globally in-demand resources like rubber and palm oil.
So there is a huge economic disparity between the golden cities/West coast cities and the North, where the Islamic political party rules. The median income in the capital is easily 2-3x more.
What's happening is poor people from the North are migrating to the coastal cities, triggering a demographic change and shift in cultural norms. They also swing the elections, skewing the results to the Islamic party. The younger generations are also heavily indoctrinated by their Muslim parents and they're using social media to connect with other radicals and spread their ideologies.
Coastal people have been having fewer and fewer children due to generations of women being highly educated and working mums. Generational wealth and education can easily disappear in one or two generations, and they're being displaced/replaced by less educated folks.
In 30 years, Malaysia will become a failed state. They've failed to escape the middle-income economy trap, their birthrate has declined very quickly, and since their education system is semi-decent, a lot of people are completing their education there and then moving abroad. Soon they will be closer to Afghanistan than Singapore in terms of development.
