You should check out the science of pair bonding in animals and humans if you are interested.

On a chemical level they get attached to their lover after their first couple of times they have sex.
Now if foids have sex with too many different partner their pair bonding mechanism gets damaged irreversibly.

Foids use the same pair bonding mechanism for bonding with their children too. If that is damaged they are unable to "love" and care for their kids.
