The MP5-wielding ones I see regularly are part of the PaDP branch, usually around embassies or escorting a motorcade.

In and around Knightsbridge. Yeah, I live nearby so I get what you're talking about, but their job isn't to walk the beat and engage with the community like other officers are. I specified regular "patrol officers" for that reason; the people you see walking around with MP5s are part of the specialist operations branch.

Every now and then (pre-corona) I'm at a conference where some diplomat is attending, and I usually see an armed response vehicle or two parked outside, a BMW X5. Two Chads with MP5s and Glocks, and I'm pretty sure there's also a G36C in the trunk. If a head of state is attending, then they always get a motorcade when they arrive and leave, where armed motorcycle cops to the front and rear of the convoy will block off traffic to ensure that they never have to stop, is not cut off, and is not overtaken.

Smaller embassies might have a significantly lesser presence but the more politically sensitive ones -- the Americans, the Russians, the Israelis, the Saudis, et cetera have some pretty tight security.
