They financialized the housing market to artificially raise the prices of homes while also selling out their properties to foreigners to make a quick buck, both of which created a tremendous shortage by pricing ordinary people out of the market, and the ones who were able to pay exorbitant mortgages/rents were left without any disposable income, and in this turbulent economy became homeless immediately upon losing their jobs.
