Its a trait selected for via evolution. Caveman tribe A kills all the men in tribe B, takes all their women. Do the women adapt to this new life as quickly as possible, still managing to reproduce? Or do they resist and get killed.

It's not just about having better options though. My best friend who is a chad fell in love with a 10/10 girl so very reluctantly left his 6/10 girlfriend who he'd been with for 4 years for her. He was torn apart by this and devastated, as was the girl. He was as guilty as can be and down and worried about her for literally years. He cried about her sometimes, crushed by what he had put her through. He removed himself from Facebook so that the old girl wouldn't have to see pictures of his new life.
The new girl on the other hand dumped her average boyfriend who she had been with for 8 years in a day and never looked back even though he was apparently suicidal. She wants pictures of them as a couple all over Facebook.
