I played a bit of F.E.A.R at a friend's place sometime in 2007 IIRC but I didn't buy my own copy for some reason.
I recently thought of that game and decided to get it from Steam. It came with 2 expansion packs -- "Extraction Point" and "Perseus Mandate".
Played through them last week and finished everything.
My thoughts: F.E.A.R is an amazing game with superb enemy AI and highly satisfying gun play. Absolutely loved the time-slowing mechanic. The gun fights were absolutely INTENSE and unlike anything else I've seem.
The story was interesting, but a bit convoluted. I also liked the voice acting, especially the radio chatter of the enemy soldiers. It really felt like you were fighting actual humans.
Minor complaints: The environment design could have been more varied. Even though the game takes place in a wide variety of gritty urban environments -- docks, industrial areas, warehouses, abandoned buildings, offices, labs etc -- the areas within the levels felt rather samey which made it easy to get lost in. Either way, the gloomy ambience kind of made up for it.
The last moments were very memorable and wrap up the game nicely.
As for the expansion packs, "Extraction Point" had some nice horror sequences, like the one in the morgue. Also loved the first fight in the church when the dormant Replica soldiers get suddenly re-activated.
"Perseus Mandate" was pretty ok. It had some good moments, but I didn't like that I had to play as a completely new character who just happens to have the exact same time-slowing abilities as the original protagonist. Also wasn't a fan of the new enemies, the mercenaries, who were just re-skinned versions of the replica soldiers but with weak voice acting. They should have just used the characters from the original game.
Overall, playing F.E.A.R and the 2 EPs was a fantastic experience. Pity they don't make single player games like this anymore.
