Found this gem of a comment. Most of the ideas are pretty well known but this guy sums it all up nicely.
"Once upon a time, in 1995, it was like this: pretty much everyone was operating on a very limited sized playing field - your school/college/workplace. local area, sports clubs and similar social groups. Then along came the internet and progressively increased the size of the playing field so you could date anyone in your entire town/city or beyond. In the old system, there was a natural order to things: the coolest dude went out with the hottest chick, and so on, and there was a natural limitation on promiscuousness (mainly girls not wanting to be known locally as sluts, but also guys focusing their efforts on the highest value girl they felt they could aim for). Nowadays, due to the anonymous nature of city-wide dating, girls can get away with being sluts. High-value men take full advantage of this and bang their way through dozens of them before settling down. The sluts develop a delusion that they will sooner or later have a relationship with one of these studs, which statistically is very unlikely (since the studs will sooner or later bang a ten and only then actually try to form a relationship). Most women these days have thus developed a delusional sense of their own value and won't settle for a man who actually corresponds to them on the sliding scale in marriage market value. As a 38-year old man, I have steadily found it more and more difficult to get a response, let alone a relationship, out of women who are equivalent to me on that sliding scale. You're not a nine, girl, you're a six that once got banged by a dude who was a nine. Wake up."
