The soy face is a gesture that signals submission in apes. You never see a football jock making this face.

Psychologists from the University of Portsmouth have published a paper suggesting gorillas use human-like facial expressions to communicate moods with one another.

One, a "play face", featuring an open mouth and showing no teeth, denotes a playful mood, usually accompanied with physical contact. Another, which is open-mouthed and displaying top teeth, could be a submissive smile -- as it mixes the play face and a bared-teeth expression, which indicates appeasement. "Many primate species also show their teeth when they scream,"

Interesting tbh

If this isn't supposed to signal low status/submission, why aren't there any photos of Chad making this face?

Interesting and it makes sense. If you're not attractive you face social aggression if you do something assertive, so you need to show that ypu're submissive to not create conflict.

Notice the girl is nowhere near the huddle.
