Maybe in USA which was mostly untouched by the war. In Europe it was a struggle to rebuild after WW2. Instead of unoccupied housing and a surplus of food, there were ruins and scarcity. Every pair of hands was useful and needed, people had to rely on each other. It was a time of empathy and cooperation. Now we are living in a time of ruthless competition where the "winners" take it all by stepping over the less fortunate.
