That's accurate but listen, I understand most mental illnesses as byproducts of these problems, byproducts of a sick society/environment. That's way a better term would be 'disorders', it doesn't mean they're not real though.

You have to understand that your brain (and your whole body) goes through constant interactions with the environment that can reshape it to some degree, today we know this phenomenon as epigenetics. In this case, this can be some food you eat, stress, medication and so on.

When kids are growing up they're more vulnerable to that. The wrong environment, chemical changes indulcing interactions can mess the way your brain operate to certain degree, especially all this behaviour/conscious part. Sometimes for good.

I think a similar thing would be how animals who are domesticated or born in captive are sometimes uncapable of surviving in the wild and often even interacting with others of their kind.
