East Germany is largely Slavic. Berlin is a Slavic name.
The Sorbs were based there. The Germans are a foreign people and probably mostly from the south. Many Germans look dark and more Mediterranean. Eastern Europe tends to have lighter skin color (pale) and have very light eyes. This is also because the Vikings were based in Eastern Europe and the Swedes repeatedly invaded there.
Germany is not white Aryan in any way. If you look at the Germans you see a strong similarity to the Italians, Spaniards and French. Black hair, dark beard, general strong persistence indicate southern origins. Eastern Europeans tend to be less persistent and very bright, beards are rare and persistence is very weak.
The true and actual Europeans are actually Slavs. The Germans are mostly Roman. The Germanic peoples no longer exist and have mixed with the Romans.

When controlling for socio-demo-graphic variables in the multivariate models, people from North and South Germany are less likely to be rated unattractive by comparison to their East-German fellow citizens. While there are in fact differences in physical appearance between the regions (e.g. people in the North are taller on average, etc.), a macro-level effect (e.g. GDP of regions) is equally likely. Although we are not able to investigate these effects at this point, further research on such regional differences below the nation state seems worthwhile in this regard.
