The fantasy is over, and life is back to its normal, unforgiving, competitive ways. Except now we have a leftover 7.5bil useless eaters that were shat out during times of prosperity, and these individuals are carried forward by the 500mil or so people that aren’t complete leaches.

The reality is if we go back 200 years, most of you losers are dying of Polio, the way nature intended.

The notion of historical progress is a myth propagated by people in power to justify existing power structures. No matter what the era is we're in, life is still fundamentally suffering, it just manifests itself in different forms.

It is true that in the past we would probably be better off on the social and sexual plane. It's also true that from a material standpoint life would be shit and you'd also have religious retards fucking things up.

Now we have better technology, and as a reaction to it people have pursued individual freedoms. But it has really been a joyless liberation, as Houellebecq shows, tearing apart the social fabric of our society, turning relationships into sexual consumerism, and leading to the collapse of a shared meaning.

Maybe we can try to create something better than both the past and what we have now. But it won't happen.
