The bible, a series of books, is separated into two parts: the Jewish old testament and the Christian new testament. The latter introduces the notion, a stark contrast to Judaism, that through one's faith in Jesus Christ, people from everywhere can become part of God's chosen people. It seems like Christians don't read their own holy book, as always.

But wouldn't that mean that she agrees more with the Old Testament in that particular regard? Generally speaking, Judaism and Christianity share the Old Testament since Judaism is the foundation of Christianity and Christianity itself began as a sect of Judaism. I think Christians calling Jews "the chosen people" is an acknowledgement of their belief in the accuracy of the Old Testament, so i don't see why my mom is wrong here.
It seems confusing because the Old Testament has certain laws/teachings that we don't need to follow today, and some that we should.
There are fundamental differences in the theological interpretations between the old and new testament. The new testament is a significant departure from the old testament in that people can become apart of god's chosen people through their faith in christ. That is a very tenet of christian theology, whereas the descendants of abraham are considered to be 'chosen' in judaism. Judaism is essentially the old testament without the new testament, her beliefs more align with Judaism if anything.
That's because christians believe that the new testament is the finalization of god's plan. They believe that certain laws and teachings in the old testament have been superseded by the teachings of jesus christ. They acknowledge old testament but the christian understanding of being chosen and salvation is because of the new testament.

What you're saying makes complete sense. The New Covenant does not require Christians to follow the rituals of the Jewish Law, but I thought they should still observe the ethics and morals of the Law. and that Christians should not say the New Testament eliminates the Old or relegates it to being meaningless. Since the Bible is the foundational literature of Christianity, Christians are expected to use or at least learn from it in its entirety.
I know that most Christians adhere to Paul's teachings and, as a result, believe that there is a new covenant after the resurrection and that those laws no longer apply. But I think the question of whether or not to follow both texts ultimately varies by denomination, so I believe her logic still isn't faulty. Tbh as far as I can recall, the only teaching from the Old Testament that she believes is that the Jew's are God's chosen people because he wanted to use them as a conduit to prepare the way for the Messiah. That this point of view closely corresponds with Judaism is right, you say.
What most people refer to when they say you don't have to follow the Old Testament as a Christian is some of the odder laws in Liv and other places in the OT. The law in Scripture can be discussed in multiple ways, with some laws overlapping into more then one type:
- The ceremonial law. This law was brought to completion with the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
- The civil Law. This law that applied only to the Nation of Israel. The Nation of Israel ceased a long time ago.
- The moral law. This covers things like the 10 Commandments. This law still applies.
