English Common Law allows for "moderate correction" of women. In 1782 Sir Francis Buller ruled famously that a husband could beat his wife with a stick no thicker than his thumb.
Rules of Marriage which were endorsed by the Catholic church in the pre-feminist era, instructed men to “scold her sharply, bully and terrify her. And if this still doesn’t work…take up a stick and beat her soundly"
In 1871, a US court outlawed "the privilege, ancient though it be, to beat her with a stick, to pull her hair, choke her, spit in her face or kick her about the floor, or to inflict upon her like indignities"
In a medieval theological manual, now in the British Museum, a man is given permission to "castigate his wife and beat her for correction"
A fashionable manual for chivalrous knights in France states "He smote her with his fist down to the earth. And then with his foot he struck her in the visage and brake her nose, and all her life after she had her nose crooked that she might not for shame show her visage it was so foul blemished. . . . Therefore the wife ought to suffer and let the husband have the word, and to be master"
A 16th century Russian edict "Household Ordinance" outlined when and how best to beat one's wife. A husband is to soundly beat his wife and can kill her for indiscipline.
Bernard of Siena in 1427 suggested to his parishioners that they exercise a little restraint and treat their wives with as much mercy as they would their hens and pigs.
In Spain, the Council of Toledo (A.D. 400) decreed that men should macerate their wives with stripes and hunger.
Romans, Gallic and other people also had the power of life and death over their wives.
