Why would it be irreversible though? And why wouldn’t the technology used on unhospitable planets not work on a hospitable earth?

Terraforming in the context of astronomy/space travel is the act of making a planet like Earth. Earth is already Earth, you can't terraform the Earth owing to what the word means.
