The only new year's resolution I have for '23 is that I want to become physically stronger. I want to push my body to its breaking point until I can become as strong as my body will allow. I've always had a disagreeable personality but I've realized I can't be rude to everyone if I don't have the strength to back it up. I'm going to fightmaxx and gymmaxx so that I don't have to run away from a fight with a bigger guy (I'm 5'7).

With that in mind, do any of you brocels have experience with BJJ or judo or some shit like that? Do you have any tips or advice for a complete beginner?

I used to do kick boxing and have been in a few real fights but I'm more of a weapons guy.

How useful is kickboxing when fighting a bigger guy?

It can be useful as it teaches you to take your opponent down even if there bigger than you. Though I did usually lose to bigger opents when we did 1v1s but they usual had a higher belt than me.
what kind of weapons?
I like guns and BB guns though I also really like hammers and other blunt weapons.

Run every day to build stamina

If he's significantly heavier than you, not very useful. You're better off learning how to use a knife in that case.

I see:feelshehe:
What's your opinion on BJJ? I heard it's quite effective for defeating bigger opponents.

Most people are heavier than me JFL. But a knife might end up landing me in jail for something trivial so I don't know

It's effective but rolling on the ground in a street fight is best avoided if possible.
Possibly. I just need to know something that will help me knock out some normie teeth :feelsBox:

I suggest you focus mid to long term learning at least one striking and one grappling technique

For striking kickboxing
For grappling sambo and nogi BJJ

Also recommend capoeira so you learn malice, agility and fighting rhythm

I’m also 5’7, if you want a chance of beating a bigger opponent, you will need a combination of all those skills, muscle memory and some critical thinking/intelligence

None of them will save you alone, BJJ won’t save you from powerful strikes if you don’t know how to escape or absorb them

Nice. How long does it take to become sufficiently good?
Depends on your dedication & instructors but even one year of serious effort should give you a solid edge over most untrained men.

Comprehensive answer. Thanks for the advice brocel.

That's motivating. I'm going to make this my goal for 2023.

I've had about 5 years of Taekwondo (TKD) experience back when I was younger, but I joined it late so I actually aged put of the program I was in and couldn't continue, so I never made it to black belt unfortunately. I'd like to find a place near me where I could train and get a black belt in something like TKD or maybe a different martial art, but most of the schools near me aren't for adults unfortunately.

Besides that I've done boxing for the last 4 years about. It's useful I guess but I've never done anything with thr training besides light sparring, which was about the same for TKD.

I've never been in a real fight, but I'm sure it would come in handy if I did actually get attacked, so it's useful training and knowledge for any person able to use it. Especially if you are a doormat beta subhuman who looks like an easy target for criminals.

Good, don't give up. I made a plan for you that might be helpful, since you seem serious about this.

First, buy some pepper spray. Costs like $10 & you now have the ability to defeat any unarmed man in a 1v1 without causing major harm.

Run a 5k every day to build your stamina. Under 20 minutes is the first goal.

There's 5 main ranges in combat. Weapon, long, mid, close, ground. Weapon range is any range that would require a weapon to hit your opponent. Long is kicking, mid is punching, close is elbows/knees, ground is to be avoided at all costs.

What's the best martial art for striking? That depends. In a controlled setting like a ring or octagon, probably Muay Thai. It's effective at all ranges with kicks, punches, elbows, & knees. That said, I prefer traditional boxing for self defense. Kicking is effective but can leave you off balance & taken to the ground especially if the terrain is slippery or uneven. Same goes for elbows & knees, effective but getting too close will make it easy for a grappler to throw you headfirst on the concrete floor.

What's the best martial art for grappling? I'm obviously biased in favor of BJJ as a brown belt myself. Like I mentioned before though, ground fighting on the street is to be avoided at all costs. Focus on learning takedown defense & escape techniques so that no man can take you to the ground or keep you on the ground.

Thanks for the effort, this is the kind of advice I was looking for. Making notes rn

Taekwondo always looked cool to me, I've been meaning to try it.
Looks like most of the advice have been about boxing so I'll be looking into it because, as you said, I don't want to be an easy target for some deranged normie.

Avoid fights whenever you can. De-escelate and run. A weapon is a last resort when your life is in danger.
