the ones I knew tangentially knew full well the reality of it, this didn't seem to cause an identity issue among them. Either they didn't care or have good compartmentalizing skills.

90% of them are there only for the benefits and they're poor/stupid trash. This is why you always need some level of empathy towards the military.
