Serious Defending against home invasion

Yesterday night I was driving when I saw about 7 burglars running out from a house, and throwing rocks into the windows as they left. They clearly broke in and stole what they could. But this place was close to where I lived, so it got me thinking about realistic methods I can defend myself here in Australia without this use of a firearm.

Man I wish we had guns in Australia, but the Port Arthur government set up lead to our right to firearms being removed. Instead we have teenagers and muslims with knives breaking into houses, and we've got to defend ourselves somehow.
