This isn't a very effective cope because happy and pretty people are also more likely to have a legacy (children, political dynasty, philanthropic foundation, etc). Depressed and ugly people rarely achieve anything.

Also, the argument that human life shouldn't be about enjoyment is philosophically acceptable but emotionally impractical: our brains are wired for pleasure, in one form or another.

Only monks can live without pleasure and not become mad, and that's due to a strong belief in an afterlife.
