Sure someone who is extremely hideous probably won't ascend even if he's dark triad, but socially he will be far better off than someone of the same looks level who isn't. Part of why dark triad personality is very effective is because it makes you charming, likable and extroverted, which initially attracts most people to you, combined with high social intelligence and the attitude of doing whatever it takes to achieve one's goals, they gain very high social status and power, making them practically invincible.
