In all fairness in the USSR usually the bare necessities like bread and milk were easy to get ahold of by the 1950s. The areas like in the photographs usually were for fancier foods. Nonetheless communism was hugely inefficient compared to the free market.

Some EE countries were doing well in some fields. Like any oldcel from EE remember Hungarian buses Ikarus which also were successful worldwide and were used even in North America.
