Probably to cause the mother intense mental suffering, death would have been too merciful of a punishment. Their children are pretty much the only people women care about, most of them would rather die than lose their kids.

I remember reading an article in some women's magazine once about a woman who had lost her husband and children because the husband decided to take his children with him in a suicide attempt. The woman pretty much said that she didn't care that much about her husband dying but that she wishes he had not taken the children with him as well.

But I don't judge that man , I think I'll do the same if I were in that situation.
