I have a theory, the old familys (aka the top 10) share a sacred knowledge of pre history.
That knowledge being there was a grand leadership conspiracy. Meaning at some point before history was recorded there was a group of enlightened (intelligent) individuals who came up with a way to rule the stupid masses and establish their family's as gods (aka people above the normies)
These people shaped history as we know it to establish social norms, and just how humans SHOULD be.
They decided the way things should go in general.

They would have allowed the "rulers" to do as they please. But they were always in command in the shadows.
Also these familys would have created religion to control the populous in a way that they deemed fit
Many of these family's likely died out (possibly due to the other family's eliminating them and theres likely only a few of the originals left
BUT they likely did this for the greater good (breeding genetically perfect humans although that was likely to appease aliens or to make genetically perfect humans to improve the human race)
