How many times have you actually tried to take a gun or a knife from someone who doesn't want to let go? Hint: it's not easy even if they're within reach and you are mentally prepared. It takes 0.25 seconds to pull the trigger.
The best move (other than not antagonizing people to begin with) was to seek cover and run away. If he ran toward the guy, he'd just have gotten shot sooner.

I think he intentionally missed to scare them. But they continued to yell at him and he saw he was being filmed so he went from warning shots to fuck life in two seconds.
This guy was probably lonely. He had a career and was in the navy. He had no record with the police. Probably led a depressing life.
