I've always liked pictures at an exhibition by Mussorgsky although Night on bear Mountain is good.

Shostakovich - Symphony No. 7 has always been a favourite of mine. He wrote it in honour of the defenders of Leningrad. I fucking hate Commies but in a way you have to admire the Slavs for what they went through eating the bodies of the dead to survive. Also Stalin hated it so much he put Shostakovich in prison!

I'm not a big history person, so why did Stalin hate it?

Any time this man plays the trumpet its incredible. One of his best works was based on Vivaldi piece with a concerto for 3 trumpets and I can't find it on YouTube but I do have it on CD.

Holst's - The Planets is great but nothing beats Jupiter for me.

It wasn't actually any one piece of music, there were several "war symphonies". Officially he was denounced for his music not being "prolitarian" enough. Stalin thought that his symphonies were not about the war but about the repression of the Soviet system. Stalin also hated anyone who was well known and popular because he feared anyone who could challenge him.

Handel - Music for the royal fireworks

Its a weird one but I've always liked "Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra" as well. I love how they break the piece of music down into individual instruments and bring them all back together in the finale. I had it on CD as a boy. My Grandfather got it for me but i lost it years ago.

Shostakovich is great LDAR music. He understood the meaninglessness, pain, misery, and utter despair of human existence.

I hit things with sticks. I'm the subhuman of the music word. I was raised on classical, though. My dad bought the first Sony CD player just to buy classical on CD in like 85. He has more classical CD's than most folks have CD's period.

@commander_zoidberg

this my shit

Well, looks like we got all the hits.

Didn't see a Canon in D though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xu5TlSXEzzs

nor any Copland: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e3rVcSy3IQ

and as long as we're on orchestral favorites,
we need some Gershwin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynEOo28lsbc

(what can I say? I love American composers!)

Yeah. Total fail on my behalf forgetting Appalachian spring and Rapsody in blue. Its one of the earliest bits of music i can remember listening too. I have been holding my dads cd hostage since 1998 when i got my first CD player.

Oh shit. How could i forget - Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis

Superb. Also one of the earliest bits of music I can remember.

Not quite a classical composer but I've always liked the work of Bear McCreary.

I also like this piece by Philip Glass - Metamorphosis One.

Holy shit, bless you sir. I remember listening to Erik Satie's Gymnopedies, but I could never remember what they were called.
