I haven't learned about it, and I haven't been to Yunnan Province. That place is more famous for the Dai people's Water-Splashing Festival. I did some research and it seems that this is a celebration of the Wa ethnic group. The Wa people highly value black, as black symbolizes diligence and health. Diligent people are compared to "black like the leaves and fruits of the waterberry tree, and beautiful like the needles of the pine tree". In ancient times, the Wa people's ancestors used "mangbule" to apply it on people's faces to seek health and safety. Later, it gradually became a traditional festival of the Wa people. The materials state that "the custom of applying ashes from the bottom of the pot, cow blood, and soil on the forehead to pray for blessings and safety. The paint used during the carnival is prepared with pure natural medicine 'mangblo'." As for whether it contains cow dung, I don't know. The region where I am from doesn't have this custom.@kerberos41
