I don't think it happens in Japan. Korea I would assume no also, but I'm not sure. Apparently though, the wife's family would usually give it to the wife, rather than keeping it themselves...then, in theory, she would put it in a joint pot with her husband for them both to spend...if that's how it works these days, it's not so bad...

Apparently it existed because women would marry into the man's house and they'd live with his parents - hence if there were farmers or whatever like most were 100 years ago, she would be working on their farm and contributing to their income - so the marriage fee would be compensation, for taking away the other couple's daughter (i.e. a source of income for the elderly parents). This I can understand, though it would seem better to scrap the upfront fee and just have the couple send the parents money if they needed it - I guess the parents might not agree to this, since they think the couple either perhaps couldn't or would choose not to pay...whereas getting the money upfront avoids that problem

Obviously China is in a bit of a problematic situation now - since 100 years ago, the average couple had 5 or 6 kids, so plenty to support them into old age - now most just have 1 and if they can't afford to/don't want to help the parents, they could be struggling...there is obviously a state pension, though for some people, that might not be enough (if they don't own their own home etc)
