AWALT. I remember reading a study where it said that in countries where women are discouraged from joining STEM fields the more they try to get into them. In countries where they are free to go into whatever they want they go into STEM way less. So basically women only want to go into spaces and do things because they are told they aren't welcome there and that its not really a good fit for them anyways.

I don't think that was the reason (although women do have that mindset in regards to male spaces, which is why they attempt to infiltrate and/or shut them down so often). The reason is economical. Countries with higher numbers of females in STEM correlates with more wealth inequality. Women in those countries have to earn money legitimately and STEM pays well. Unlike the west which subsidizes and babies women with welfare, divorce settlements, affirmative action and shit.

In other words, if the west wants more women in STEM they have to stop enabling women with free handouts and male wealth distribution. Its more or less the same reason why more men take high risk jobs. We have to work because we have no choice and no-one else will support us.

It's probably a mix of both of these factors tbh. I notice in general a lot of women try to get into spaces they are not welcome just to get in (ex: Men's clubs that they have 0 interest in when they are welcomed in). But yeah your point is probably a big factor as well.
